Well, tings have moved on quite a lot. Unfornately I'm too tired to go on about it (not _everything_ changes that fast)

Despite regular trips to technical hill and feeling a bit like the Greek guy who was cursed to roll a rock up a hill for all eternity I've got a new job, another pay rise and have now made more video in the last three months than the last few years :) - and taken more responsibility on it. Some of which was live, some of which has been posted without my name on but hey.

If you enjoy (vaguely) TV-themed sarcasm and slightly offensive language from the UK....

[music |Another Love Song (QOTSA)]

Don't look for an explanation.

A really cool summer. Busy. But cool. Taking in such far-flung places as Edinburgh, Crete, Krakow, Jastkow, Glastonbury, Farringdon and Ealing. "From Kathmandu to Catford" and all that.

A major pay rise (just how major is yet to be confirmed). And what may even be a freeing from the trappedness of the last 6 years or so - the funny thing being how little I realise the trappedness.

So.... Listening to "Songs for the Deaf". Been ages since I listened to that album. Come back from being in the pub with a technical project manager and a board member, talking about department structuring. Sometimes wander why I don't become a management consultant, then remembering because it's BORING. So I f*** around in studios. Much more fun.

I have ideas. Finally. Lots of them. And they're going to get out. To a website near you. Not this one, in case you're wondering. Just which, and how, I dunno yet. But it's going to be actual, proper new media. Not some crappy video in a box. YouTube is merely the feeder, Joost the dull version. The potential is there. Can I do it? Christ knows, it's been so long. I've been reminded, a few times, what I used to be like - the drive, the passion. And it's coming back, I can feel it. Better, newer. I realise why I've felt so caged for so long. Now I'm working with more talented people. I've got film credits, I've worked on cutting-edge online. I can see the holes in what there is. But will they listen? Who knows. Let's see. If not, it's VFX for me. If so..... rock on London.

Yeah the content was crap, relatively. That's what happens when you're a physics student making TV. But now I'm a Digital Workflow Consultant making Interactive Propositions. OK so that's buzzword overload, but now I'm Pro. I can see the holes and I know the game.

The hard thing is that it means that certain people were right. Not that I was wrong, but blinded. But it's not to look back. It's to look forward, to the potential of 2009.

Last weekend - Glastonbury. Four days (well three and a bit) in the Somerset mud - and we loved every minute of it! Well maybe not quite every minute. But the Festival is awesome! [Not like a hot-dog]

This weekend - British Grand Prix! Almost as good, which is just as well, as it cost me more. Reserved seat on Luffield, race day only! Whoo!

Only damper is work - but then I'm "making enquiries" again on that front.....

buzzwords.... [May. 27th, 2008|09:40 am]
Panic NOW!

Yes, I realise that they're completely natural and you can't get away from them when dealing with technology - I guess because most people don't actually understand it. But they still get right on my *"£!s.

My bugbear for quite a while has been 'HD' or High Definition. Yes it is nice. Yes you (can) get a very good picture quality. But it is not revolutionary. It's just putting twice as many lines into the picture, much the same as when we went from 405-line to 625-line in the early '70s. It is not like going from black-and-white to colour.

The actual revolutionary thing was going digital in the '90s - this has enabled HD, it has enabled Internet distribution, it has completely changed post-production. It's given us a hell of a lot more flexibility, to the point where we're much more limited by our imaginations than the tools that we're using.

The other thing that pisses me off about HD is how compressed it is in general. HDV gives you 1080 for less than £3k! Yessss, but if you move the camera too quickly it looks crap. It's downsampled so far it's hard to do any kind of fx with it, and it's MPEG2 for chrissake - 1980's technology. Which means that it's really shit to edit with unless you transcode it first, especially in Final Crap Pro (and that is a whole other rant....) It's crap when you try to grade it in with anything else because it's missing the colour depth.

The EX-1, sony's 'revolutionary' solid state camera - except that it's not, 'cos Panasonic have been selling something very similar for years. Sony finally realised that nobody wanted massive bulky disks in the side and would rather go with small cards. The interesting thing is that the camera is generally better but the recording format worse. Except..... for the CMOS sensor, which again is impossible for doing anything involving tracking with because of image shearing.

HDCAM - high-definition digi! Like hell. It's high-definition DVCAM - perfectly good for many things but nowhere near as good as Digi. Again if you've put it into a grading suite you'll know what I'm talking about.

Yes there are those who would say, well it's budget don't do VFX. Don't grade too hard. Don't over-light it. etc. etc. You know what? I didn't have to worry about that with SD, because the various SD digital formats, in general, are better.

On the other hand, you know what I'm looking forward to using? that's right. An HD system that's actually worthy of the name. Not revolutionary, but f**ing good - supposedly. I can't wait to prove the pudding

Update on the film: Worse than I thought. Imagine if you will, illuminated on canvas:
- 'exec producer' who's nothing of the sort and sets a ludicrously ambitious schedule
- kit that doesn't work properly
- a vague notion [not on my part] that just because something costs 10,000 pounds less doesn't mean that it's not as good
- a commercials director who doesn't understand the meaning of the word 'micro-budget'
- two out of three producers who actually believe the director
- most shots requiring 4 times as much work as was initially thought.
- nobody available who has the knowledge or training to help

Looks suspiciously like a huge, industrial wind-tunnel parked near a muckspreader convention, doesn't it? So that's been the last two months - and now we're (we?? I mostly...) also plotting the entire audio/video web production for a major national newspaper.

And moving flats too. Which is actually good, think we've got a really good deal.

Hmmm... free time... friends... I think I can still remember what they are....

[music |Death In Vegas - Dirt]

Well I kind of only posted this because:
a) I'm never normally listening to music when I post and I think that this track is really cool
b) It's gone midnight, I'm a bit drunk and it sounded like a good idea

Things that are pissing me off at the moment include a weird desire to stay at work and surf the net despite other people having left the office, even though I have a perfectly functional (actually better) 'net connection at home. And an even odder desire to see what's going on with my old Uni to which I've paid very little attention in the last 3 years; I even found a load of photos of my 4th year project hanging around on my hard disk the other day that I'd completely forgotten about. Very little of my student tv past though - and what there is is crap! Oh well, goes to show how much I've improved...

Doing some VFX on a feature film for the next couple of weeks - which should be pretty good. Except that Russell is involved so while I'm expecting it to look impressive I'm also expecting it to take 3 times as long as projected and cost a lot more :) At least he's not directing this one!

Mainly missing Agnieszka at the moment, having met her mum last week she's on-shift at the moment then doing the whole family thing in Belgium next week so I'm not going to see her for a long time. Funny that it's only at times like this you realise just how good it is to see certain people... oh well. I do at least have some time to myself to do important sorting and things like that.

And also to try to get over the bloody vicious cold that I've had for the last week. Since I started using salt as gargling fluid when they stopped selling Betadine something like 5-6 years ago I've never had a sore throat last more than 3 days. Colds lasting months, sometimes, but not throats. Until now. 5 days and counting, and of real pain too. Yesterday morning I couldn't speak for about 3 hours dammit! I blame my landlord - but that's a whole other story....

As I'm now properly rambling and really need some sleep, and the album's already got to Rekkit, I think I should go to bed before I actually fall asleep. I know, it's pathetic. But I've been ill. Really.
